چکیده

ISSN:0975-1459 Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of some diseases such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and atheroscleorosis. Smoking may enhance oxidative stress not only through the production of reactive oxygen radicals in smoke but also through weakening of the antioxidant defense systems. Cigarette smoke may promote atherogenesis by producing oxygen-derived free radicals that damage lipids. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of cigarette smoking on changes in lipid profile, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in cigarette smokers. The study population consisted of 200 male subjects divided into two groups; 100 smokers and ageand sex-matched non-smokers 100 subjects were selected. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were found to be significantly higher for smokers than for non-smokers. Biochemical parameters such as cardiac markers, lipid profile, apolipoproteins B and A1 (Apo B and A1), lipid peroxidation thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and antioxidants (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E were measured. A highly significant increase in the levels of cardiac markers was found in smokers when compared with non-smokers. Enhanced lipid peroxidation with concomitant depletion of antioxidants was observed smokers as compared to non-smokers. The levels of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL were found to be significantly high, while HDL was significantly low in smokers compared to non-smokers. In addition, the activity of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were more significantly altered in smokers than nonsmokers. These results suggest that the atherogenic effects of smoking are mediated in part by free radical damage to lipids and possible breakdown of antioxidant status in cigarette smoking.

Effects of Short-term Supplementation with Vitamin C on Lipid Peroxidation in Cigarette Smokers

Background:Cigarette smoke has been reported to result in a depletion of body antioxidant vitamins. This study evaluated the association between smoking, dietary antioxidants and indices of oxidative stress in male cigarette smokers. Methods: Blood samples were collected at a baseline and at the end of 5 days supplementation with 500 mg vitamin C (two dosages/day) from 36 smokers and 43 nonsmok...

Decreased blood antioxidant capacity and increased lipid peroxidation in young cigarette smokers compared to nonsmokers: Impact of dietary intake

BACKGROUND Blood of cigarette smokers routinely displays decreased antioxidant capacity and increased oxidized lipids compared to nonsmokers. This is thought to be due to both chronic exposure to cigarette smoke in addition to low intake of dietary antioxidants, and is a routine finding in veteran smokers. No study to date has determined the independent and combined impact of dietary intake and...

Almond consumption reduces oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation in male smokers.

Smoking increases the risk of several chronic diseases associated with elevated oxidative stress status. Almonds are a good source of antioxidant nutrients and may diminish smoking-related biomarkers of oxidative stress. We investigated whether almond consumption decreases biomarkers of oxidative stress in young male smokers. We conducted a randomized, crossover clinical trial with 60 healthy m...

Increase of a type of oxidative DNA damage, 8-hydroxyguanine, and its repair activity in human leukocytes by cigarette smoking.

To investigate the oxidative stress induced by cigarette smoking, the levels of a form of oxidative DNA damage, 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OH-Gua), and its repair activity in the leukocytes of current smokers, ex-smokers, and complete nonsmokers were measured. The mean level of 8-OH-Gua was 1.88-fold higher in smokers as compared to complete nonsmokers (the difference was statistically significant, P ...

Cigarette Smoking and Oxidative Stress in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

AIM To determine whether cigarette smoking, as a risk factor for CAD, affects (anti)oxidant status. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included patients with CAD, divided according to their smoking status and the number of cigarettes smoked during a day. Biological markers of oxidative stress (concentration of oxidants and activity of antioxidant enzymes) were measured in all subjects. RESULTS ...
